Kaeshi Kata
A Short History
Kaeshi Kata is different from other main judo Kata in that it is not of
Kodokan origin and is therefore not 'Kaeshi no Kata'. When the Kodokan judo Kata
were formed in 1906 and later revised in 1921, counter techniques were not a
major part of judo and were almost frowned upon by the Kodokan hierarchy.
However, a number of other universities, primarily the Tokai and the
Butokai, thought counters not only legitimate but also worthy of their own Kata
or forms. Later Mr Kaiwashi, a graduate of the Tokai, introduced Go no Sen to
Europe whilst Mr Abbe, who founded the BJC in the late 1950's, introduced us to
Kaeshi Kata from the Butokai.
The Kata
Kaeshi Kata along with Nage no Kata and Katame no Kata go to make up a group
called the Randori Kata, where not only must the techniques employed be
workable judo but should also be practised and perfected in Randori. These Kata
should be seen as a grounding in general judo and not merely as a grading
requirement, or as an end in themselves.
Unlike the Kodokan Kata which has been set since 1921, these other judo
Kata have been somewhat more flexible in their definition. This being so there
are at least two variations as to the order of the throws in this Kata although
the one below is now considered to be the standard for the BJC (MAC).
Finally the Kata should be performed straight through; there are no
sets, with Uke completing the attacking throw first followed by a second attack
with Tori making the counter.
